.243 Winchester

Every kid’s first deer rifle

Overview

The .243 Winchester might be the most perfectly balanced deer cartridge ever made — not because it’s the most powerful, but because it does two completely different jobs better than almost anything else. Light varmint loads scream across prairie dog towns. Heavier deer loads take whitetails cleanly out to 300 yards. It’s mild enough for youth hunters, accurate enough for competitive use, and effective enough that a lot of hunters who started with a .243 never felt the need to upgrade. That’s the highest compliment you can pay a hunting cartridge.

History

Winchester introduced the .243 in 1955. The design is credited to Warren Page, a shooting editor at Field and Stream who had been wildcatting a similar round. The concept: take the proven .308 Winchester case, neck it down to 6mm, and get a cartridge that could serve double duty for varmints and deer. Hunters agreed. Within a decade it was one of the most popular deer cartridges in North America.

Common Uses

Deer hunting, first and always. The .243 has taken more first deer than almost any other cartridge. But don’t let the gentle recoil fool you — plenty of experienced hunters shoot nothing else for whitetails. Varmint hunting with light loads is a serious secondary use. The same rifle serves both roles without modification.

Hunting Applications

Standard deer loads push 85- to 100-grain bullets at 2,960 to 3,100 fps. Varmint loads with 55- to 70-grain bullets run 3,500 to 3,800 fps. At typical whitetail ranges — inside 300 yards — the .243 is entirely adequate. Recoil is low enough that hunters don’t develop flinches, which means more accurate shots in the field. The one honest limitation: it’s on the light end for elk.

Popular Configurations

Every major ammunition manufacturer loads for the .243. Federal’s Fusion and Trophy Bonded loads are popular for deer. Hornady’s Superformance line pushes the velocity envelope. Winchester’s Power-Point is a classic that still works fine. Prices are in line with other popular deer cartridges.

Why Shooters Love .243

Because it proves you don’t need a magnum to fill a freezer. Low recoil, flat trajectory, genuine dual-purpose capability. The .243 is the cartridge that teaches new hunters they can do this, and the cartridge that experienced hunters pick up when they want to enjoy the hunt instead of fighting their rifle.
