.500 S&W Magnum

The absolute unit

Overview

The .500 S&W Magnum is the most powerful production handgun cartridge ever made. That sentence is not hyperbole. It is not marketing copy. It is a measured, documented fact, and it has been true since Smith & Wesson introduced the round in 2003. If you’ve fired one, you already know everything this page is about to tell you. If you haven’t, understand that this is a cartridge that produces over 2,500 foot-pounds of energy from a handgun — more than many rifle cartridges — and it is loud, physical, and completely unforgettable.

History

Smith & Wesson introduced the .500 S&W Magnum in 2003, developed in partnership with Cor-Bon ammunition. The goal was straightforward: build the most powerful production handgun cartridge in the world, full stop. To chamber it, S&W developed the massive X-frame revolver — a new platform entirely, because no existing frame was large enough. The Model 500 revolver weighs over 4 pounds unloaded. The design incorporated a built-in compensator, which was not a marketing feature — it was an engineering necessity. Without it, shooting would be considerably less controlled than it already is.

Ballistics

A standard 350-grain .500 S&W Magnum load leaves the muzzle at approximately 1,975 feet per second and produces around 3,031 foot-pounds of energy. Lighter 275-grain loads can exceed 2,000 fps. Heavier 500-grain loads run slower but deliver crushing momentum for the largest, toughest game. To put this in perspective: a standard .44 Magnum load produces around 741 ft-lbs. The .500 S&W Magnum produces more than four times that. The laws of physics don’t change just because you want to fire it one-handed — the recoil is substantial by any reasonable definition of that word.

Common Uses

Dangerous game hunting, particularly in Africa and Alaska. Brown bear and grizzly defense for guides and hunters operating in areas where encounters with large predators are a genuine occupational hazard. Silhouette shooting. And — honestly — the bucket list. A meaningful percentage of people who own or have fired a .500 S&W Magnum did so primarily because they wanted to know what it felt like. That’s a completely legitimate reason. Experiential shooting is real, and this cartridge is at the extreme end of the spectrum.

Pros and Cons

Pros: the most powerful production handgun cartridge available, period. Genuine capability against the largest and most dangerous game animals on earth. Bragging rights that are actually earned, not assumed. The Smith & Wesson Model 500 is a quality firearm built to a very high standard. Cons: the gun weighs over four pounds. The ammunition is expensive — expect to pay $4 to $6 per round or more for quality loads. Recoil is severe enough that extended range sessions require real commitment. And the gun is large enough that practical carry, even in the woods, requires a dedicated holster and a genuine reason. This is not a casual purchase. It is a deliberate one.

Fun Facts

The .500 S&W Magnum produces enough recoil force that S&W designed the Model 500 with a built-in compensator and a cushioned, oversized grip from the factory — both features that exist specifically to make the gun shootable rather than simply possible to fire. The cartridge is also available in a lever-action rifle platform, where the longer barrel delivers velocity numbers that start encroaching on traditional rifle territory. If you thought the handgun version was excessive, the rifle version will recalibrate your understanding of the word.
