.400 Legend

The .350’s bigger brother

What is .400 Legend?

Winchester looked at the .350 Legend, watched straight-wall hunters ask for more, and delivered. The .400 Legend is a straight-walled rifle cartridge introduced in 2023, purpose-built for hunters who want a harder-hitting option in states that restrict bottlenecked cartridges. It fires a .400-inch diameter bullet — bigger than its .350 sibling — and it’s already turning heads in the Midwest hunting community. This one’s new, but it’s not a gimmick. Winchester doesn’t put their name on gimmicks.

History

Winchester announced the .400 Legend in 2023, making it one of the freshest cartridges on the shelf. It was designed from the ground up as a straight-wall hunting round, building on the success of the .350 Legend platform but stepping up to a larger diameter projectile for hunters who felt the .350 left them wanting a little more authority downrange. Think of it as the natural evolution — same concept, more thump. It’s chambered in the AR-15 platform and bolt-action rifles, which means you don’t need to buy a whole new ecosystem to shoot it. The momentum is building fast, and if the .350 Legend’s adoption curve is any indication, the .400 is going places.

Common Uses

Deer hunting. Full stop — that’s the mission this cartridge was born for. But “deer hunting” undersells it. This thing is legal in straight-wall-only states like Michigan, Ohio, Indiana, and Iowa, which is exactly why hunters there are paying attention. It hits harder than the .350 Legend at similar ranges, making it a confident choice for anyone who wants more margin on a big-bodied whitetail or a shot that isn’t textbook perfect. It also works in AR-15 platforms, so if you’re already running a straight-wall AR for deer, the .400 is an easy conversation to have with yourself.

Ballistics

The .400 Legend pushes a 215-grain bullet at around 2,250 feet per second from a 16-inch barrel, generating right around 2,400 foot-pounds of muzzle energy. That’s a meaningful step up from the .350 Legend and puts it in serious hunting territory. Recoil is manageable — more than the .350, less than your uncle’s .450 Bushmaster that he insists everyone needs to shoot at least once. It’s a straight-wall cartridge, so don’t expect 500-yard ballistics, but inside 200 yards — where most whitetail hunting actually happens — it does exactly what it’s supposed to do.

Ammunition Types

Being a newer cartridge, the .400 Legend’s ammo selection is still growing, but Winchester has been leading the charge. You’ll find hunting-focused loads in soft-point and polymer-tipped configurations, built for controlled expansion on deer-sized game. As adoption grows, expect more manufacturers to jump in. For now, Winchester is your primary source, and they’ve loaded it with hunters in mind from day one. Stock up when you see it — new calibers can run thin on the shelf while demand catches up with supply.

Platform Compatibility

The .400 Legend was designed to run in AR-15 platforms using a standard bolt face, which is a big deal for AR hunters who don’t want to swap bolts, lowers, or magazines. It also fits in purpose-built bolt-action hunting rifles. Winchester chambered several of their own rifles for it right out of the gate, and other manufacturers are following. If you’re already a straight-wall AR shooter, the transition is straightforward. If you’re new to the platform, this is a fine reason to start.
