7mm-08 Remington
The short-action sleeper
The 7mm-08 Remington is the short-action sleeper that serious hunters keep recommending to each other while the general public sleeps on it. It kicks less than a .308 Winchester. It shoots flatter than a .308 Winchester. It kills deer just as dead. And it does all of this from a shorter, lighter, handier action. The only mystery is why it took this long to get the recognition it deserves.
The 7mm-08 was a wildcat for years before Remington standardized it in 1980. Hunters and handloaders had been necking down .308 cases to 7mm for decades. Silhouette shooters helped drive early adoption — it was ideal for knocking over steel at distance without the recoil of larger magnums. From there, deer hunters discovered it, youth hunters discovered it, and recoil-sensitive shooters of all ages discovered it.
Deer hunting is the primary application, and the 7mm-08 is one of the best deer cartridges made. Youth and smaller-framed hunters particularly benefit from the mild recoil. Long-range deer hunting out to 400 yards is entirely viable. Elk and black bear are taken successfully with premium bullets and careful shot placement.
Standard loads push a 140-grain bullet at approximately 2,860 fps. Quality 140-grain 7mm bullets retain velocity and energy exceptionally well at distance. Wind drift is meaningfully better than .308 with high-BC bullets. For deer inside 400 yards, the 7mm-08 is simply excellent. The recoil advantage isn’t trivial: hunters who shoot comfortably take more accurate shots.
Federal, Remington, Winchester, Hornady, and Nosler all load the 7mm-08. Hornady’s American Whitetail and ELD-X loads are popular. Federal’s Fusion is reliable at a reasonable price. For handloaders, the outstanding selection of 7mm projectiles makes it a pleasure to work with.
Because it proves that bigger isn’t always better. Less recoil, flatter trajectory, and the same dead deer at the end of the day. It’s the cartridge that smart hunters recommend when someone asks “what should I hunt deer with?” — and the person asking usually ends up wondering why they didn’t switch sooner.
